Biodata of Mr. V. S. Achuthanandan (CPIM)
Son of Sankaran and Accamma; born on 20th October 1923; studied up Standard VII (Upper Primary)
Political and Trade Union Worker.

Entered Politics through Trade Union activities; joined State Congress in 1939;
became member of the Communist Party in 1940; imprisoned for five years and six
months; went underground for a total period of four and a half years in 1946, 1954, 1962,
1963, 1965 and 1975 as part of various struggles.

Was secretary CPI (M) State Committee from 1980 to 1992; Was Convener, Left Democratic Front from 1996 to 2001; Leader of Opposition from 1992 to 1996 and from 2001 to 2006. (Previously elected to KLA in 1967, 1970, 1991 and 2001).

As Leader of Opposition, took up various causes that increased his popularity among people. The issues raised by him included atrocities against women, encroachment of forests, wetlands and beaches and other social issues.

Following serious sectionalism in the CPI (M), he was initially denied party ticket to contest the Assembly elections in 2006. And the party Polit Bureau to which he was a member had to intervene to give him ticket. He was elected to the Assembly from Malampuzha constituency and became the Chief Minister.

However, his functioning as Chief Minister was impaired because of the rift with party State Secretary Pinarai Vijayan. He was dropped from the Polit Bureau over factionalism. The polit bureau had to intervene again to give him ticket in the 2010 Assembly elections.

Currently member of CPl(M) State Committee, State Secretariat and Central Committee.
